Abstract Across many industries, particularly in health care delivery, interdependent work is performed under conditions that make bounded stable teams infeasible, creating a need to understand factors that foster teaming in the absence of team stability. Teaming refers to coordination and mutual adjustment during episodes of interdependent work. The present research investigates teaming in the high-stakes, fast-paced setting of a hospital emergency room, and focuses on the effects of a new organizational structure, which we call a team scaffold, on teaming effectiveness and performance outcomes. Using a multi-method research design with qualitative interview and observational data and quantitative operational data analyzed with adapted network methods, we examine whether and how team scaffolds facilitate teaming in a dynamic work environment. Although team scaffolds were implemented with little or no membership stability, their introduction triggered significant changes in teaming networks and behaviors in ways that improved operational performance. Implications of team scaffolds for theory and practice are discussed.

Team Scaffolds: How Minimal Team Structures Enable Role-based Coordination

In this dissertation, I integrate research on role-based coordination with concepts adapted from the team effectiveness literature to theorize how minimal team structures support effective coordination when people do not work together regularly. I argue that role-based coordination among relative strangers can be interpersonally challenging and propose that team scaffolds (minimal team structur...

Making Project Team Recommendations from Online Information Sources

We are developing an Internet platform called MediaTeam that provides a marketplace connecting media content consumers to communities of media content creators. The platform is enabled by our method for automated assembly of virtual project teams. Media creators use the automated team assembler to quickly identify and team with collaborators. The team assembly platform factors in how the skills...

Forming Long Term Teams to Exploit Synergies among Heterogeneous Agents

In this work, we describe how agents can take advantage of synergies among each other and increase their efficiency at accomplishing tasks by working in teams. We present different team structures for heterogeneous agents, which range from static teams that are formed upfront and never change, to dynamic teams where agents can change teams as need arises, to teams that allow only some types of ...

How virtual are we? Measuring virtuality and understanding its impact in a global organization

We’re becoming more virtual all the time!” is heard in many global corporations today. But basing decisions on this is elusive, as “virtuality” itself isn’t measurable. Lack of definition makes it hard to assess how virtual teaming affects performance, or to design infrastructures and toolsets to support distributed work. Using the concept of discontinuities, or a decrease in expected cohesion,...
